Not Just a Temporary Change

Maddie and I on the BeachOne of the saddest and most gut wrenching things that I experience as a Beachbody Coach is when someone goes through 90 days of a program like P90X, gets outstanding results, but then slips back into their old unhealthy ways. We see it all the time, people will lose 100 lbs and then gain it all back in just a matter of months. For some reason they can’t make that permanent shift from an unhealthy lifestyle into a healthy one. But why is that? What do I tell people to help them make this a PERMANENT change, not just a 90 day change? Understand something first, though, that even though I have helped a lot of people make that permanent shift in their way of living, there are also some people who I just can’t help, and quite frankly it eats me alive. I watch these people destroy themselves after working so hard over a 3 month period. When you talk about terrible feelings, ones where you feel like you did something wrong and feel like you should have done more, this is one of those things at the top of the list. When I see it happen, for days and even longer I can’t stop thinking about what I can do differently with the next person to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to them. It’s my responsibility as a coach to make sure it doesn’t happen, but sadly enough it probably still will happen from time to time.

Making That Shift

So how do I stop people from thinking it’s just a temporary change? I make them visualize their future. The problem that we have anymore is that people only look at what’s happening now, what’s directly in front of them, and they completely neglect or purposely ignore where they will be in 30 years if they stay on the same track they’re on now. They do what “feels good” to them now, which can lead to terrible decisions when it comes to health and fitness. Ironically enough, “feeling good” to them means they focus on the instant gratification, such as unhealthy food tasting good, rather than how they will feel afterwards. That “feel good” moment turns into a “feel bad” moment pretty darn quickly. They are bloated, know they made a mistake, beat themselves up over it, and then slip into a temporary depression causing them to say “screw it” and eat even more bad food. When I work with people, I tell them that instead of focusing on what feels good now, focus on what feels good later, meaning BEFORE indulging in something unhealthy, think about how they would feel AFTERWARDS! When they start thinking about their long term goals and the feeling of regret they will experience, they usually opt for the healthier alternative. One correct decision to help them move towards their goals. It’s the small decisions that they make daily over time that determine how successful or non-successful someone will be in regards to remaining healthy.

When someone is going through their 90 days of a program like P90X, I do my best to explain to them that this is a permanent lifestyle change, not just a temporary one. It’s one thing to just tell them that, but it’s another to dig deep within them and discover something that will force them to continue living a healthy lifestyle for years and years to come. What is that? Usually it’s their family and leading by example for their children and grandchildren. Let’s face it, nobody wants to be 50 years old, obese, not able to move, on numerous medications, when their grandchildren are asking them to play ball with them. That would eat any grandparent alive, or at least I know it would me. I want to be able to play ball with my great-grandchildren when I’m in my 80’s, and if I stay on the track I’m on now, that’s a very good possibility.

Also, you have to remember that your children and grandchildren, and your entire family for that matter is watching you, studying you, copying everything you’re doing. You are a leader by example. If you’re living a very unhealthy lifestyle, guess what your children are doing? You guessed it, they are living an unhealthy lifestyle as well. It sickens me to see obese children walking around, which is becoming more and more common, because it shows me how selfish parents can be. No parent in their right mind would be happy knowing that they are shortening their child’s life significantly and shortening their active years even more. Well guess what, that’s exactly what they are doing! These parents are KILLING their children because of the decisions they are making in their own life on a daily basis. People need to look in the mirror and realize that every decision they make in regards to their health has a direct affect on the people that are closest to them, especially their children. How would you feel if you found out that you just shortened your child’s life by 10 years? It would absolutely DESTROY you right? Think about that every single time that you make a health decision. Your family is watching you and following your lead, so if you’re living a healthy lifestyle by working out and eating healthy daily, they will do the same. What an amazing gift to give to your family, the gift of living healthy!

Please understand that changing your health by going through P90X or any other program is not just a temporary change, but a complete lifestyle change and lifelong commitment. Do this for you, do this for your family, and realize that each tiny decision you make every day determines whether or not you move towards your goals or away from them, and can either create a healthy life for your family or an unhealthy one. 1. Josh, after having recently completing P90X, I can really relate to what you mean by “Lifestyle Change” vs. “Temporary Change”. It takes a very strong minded person to wake up every morning, push themselves through a rigorous workout, eat healthy 90% of the time. I know for myself, I still have not yet mastered my will to eat clean for a full 90 days and NEVER SKIP A SINGLE WORKOUT! However, I am getting wiser every day that passes, Im starting to understand that if you want to be constantly growing and evolving into the best person that you can be, you have to be nourishing the body with ONLY the cleanest forms of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Im digressing now so I will say its nice to hear from you on this new blog you have started, all it takes is one guy like you to inspire and change peoples lives, to bring them into this Knowledge. Keep up the good work and I hope to see more videos and tips from the first guy ever to give me the assurance I needed to know that I could do make a lifestyle change!

  2. You are so right man! It is so sad and also one of the hardest things for me to do is watch someone be so diligent and then just go back to the way they were in the beginning. It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle.
